This houseplant comes from Mexico and regions in Central America, where it’s used to tropical temps during the months surrounding Christmas. Scientifically known as the Euphorbia pulcherrima, the (large-sized) poinsettia is loved in Christmas and other holiday settings because of its matching red and green colors that thrive brightest during this season. The large size reaches approximately one foot and a half tall and 15 inches wide leaf end to the leaf end. Warm-up by the fire this year with a large Christmas Poinsettia. In the past, the poinsettia has been used for medical assistance in certain areas. Some have used parts of the plant to help with fever, pain, and as a laxative among other uses (Don’t try at home.)

A Dash of Yellow with Purpose

You may notice a dash of yellow in the middle of the red leaves. When observed closely they’re actually clumps of buds containing cyathium. After the plant sheds its leaves it can reproduce new plants on its own as it has both male and female parts. This makes it monoecious or hermaphroditic.
